The wind howled as Mary stared out the foggy hospital window. She shivered slightly, pulling her cardigan tighter around her frail body.

Just yesterday the doctors had given her the difficult news – her cancer was not responding to treatment. After months of grueling chemo and holding onto hope, it felt like her world was crumbling.

“Why God? Why now?” she whispered, a tear escaping down her cheek.

She had prayed so hard, asking God to heal her. Asking Him to show her His faithfulness. But now as she faced down an unknown future, the fears and doubts began taking root inside her heart.

She wondered if He really cared if He actually heard her cries for help those long nights.

We all face turbulent seasons that can test our faith. Times when waves of suffering crash down and we wonder if God’s promises stand true.

But no matter how bleak the circumstance, we can anchor deep into the unshakable foundation of His steadfast love. For our souls can trust that even when nothing makes sense, the cords of His kindness and mercy will sustain us.

In this post, I’ll explore the firm foundation for God’s faithfulness and how you can find confidence in Him through every season of life.

The Basis for God’s Faithfulness

Bible Study Tools

God’s faithfulness is rooted in who He is. Five key attributes of His character make His faithfulness possible:

1. God is Omniscient: This means He possesses infinite knowledge and wisdom. God knows everything about the past, present, and future – including every detail about you! “God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.” (1 John 3:20 NIV)

2. God is Omnipotent: He has unlimited power and authority to accomplish anything He desires. Nothing is too difficult for the Lord! “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” (Job 42:2 ESV)

3. God is Omnipresent: He is everywhere, all the time. We can never escape His presence. “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?” (Psalm 139:7 ESV)

4. God is Truth: God can’t lie. He is the standard and source of truth. “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind.” (Numbers 23:19a ESV)

5. God is Immutable: He does not change. His character and promises remain steadfast forever. “For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.” (Malachi 3:6 ESV)

Because God possesses these attributes, you can count on His Word. What He says He will do, He will do!

Even when we are faithless, He remains faithful (2 Timothy 2:13 NIV).

Examples of God’s Faithfulness in Scripture

Examples Of God's Faithfulness

Throughout Scripture, we see demonstrations of God proving Himself trustworthy.

For instance:

  • In Noah’s day, God warned that He would send a devastating flood as judgment on the world’s wickedness. No one listened except Noah. Yet God faithfully fulfilled His word and preserved Noah’s family as He had promised (Genesis 6-9 NIV).
  • God told Abram He would make him the father of a great nation, through which all the families of the earth would be blessed. This seemed impossible since Abram and Sarai were elderly and childless. But in their old age, God miraculously enabled them to have a son, Isaac, launching the nation of Israel (Genesis 12, 15, 17, 21).
  • When the people of Nineveh heard the warning of judgment from the prophet Jonah, they repented in sackcloth and ashes. True to His word, God relented from the calamity He planned to bring upon them (Jonah 3).
  • Through the prophet Isaiah, God promised that the Messiah would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14). Hundreds of years later, Jesus was miraculously conceived by Mary, a virgin through the power of the Holy Spirit. God was faithful to His promise!

From beginning to end, the Bible reveals a trustworthy God who demonstrates His faithfulness to His people in countless ways.

Though we are often unfaithful, He remains faithful!

How You Can Rest in God’s Faithfulness

Resting In God's Faithfulness

Here are some key promises that give us stability and assurance:

  • God’s kindness and compassion are new every morning. We serve a loving, merciful Savior whose grace is fresh and abundant each day. He never runs out of patience or gets weary of your struggles. “The Lord’s steadfast love never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV)
  • God empowers you to do whatever He calls you to do. Sometimes God calls you to things that seem scary or impossible in your strength. But He promises to equip you with everything you need to obey and honor Him. “He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:24 ESV)
  • God provides a way out of every temptation. No matter what temptation you face, God promises to limit it and show you a path through it without sinning. With His help, you can stand up under any trial. “God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV)
  • God causes all things to work for the good of those who love Him. During seasons of hardship and loss, this promise gives us hope. God is working behind the scenes, using all circumstances to ultimately bless you. “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28 ESV)
